Our role

Where a body builder fits

Most vehicles reach their owner in a straight line: manufacturer, importer, dealer, customer. That line works as long as the requirement is standard. It stops working the moment the vehicle has to do a job no catalogue covers.

Deltamed

Operator with a mission-specific requirement

We start from a certified base vehicle — a Volkswagen, a Mercedes-Benz, a MAN — and turn it into a working piece of emergency equipment: structure, interior, electrical system, medical and operational integration, type approval, documentation. The chassis keeps its manufacturer warranty. Everything built onto it is ours — and so is the responsibility for it, for the whole service life of the vehicle.

History

From distributor to manufacturer

The company changed shape three times in twenty-eight years. Each time for the same reason: what customers were asking for had outgrown what the previous setup could deliver.

1997

Founded

A private Romanian company supplying emergency medicine equipment, working mainly with public hospitals.

2000

The first ambulance

The first ambulance is sold, with the equipment already installed in the vehicle instead of supplied separately. From this point the company works in complete vehicles rather than individual products.

2007

Production starts in Gilău

Ambulance production begins at the current site, kit-based at first. Within a few years Deltamed becomes the leading ambulance manufacturer in Romania.

2010

Diversification

Customer demand moves beyond ambulances, and meeting it means developing our own solutions. This is the point at which an ambulance manufacturer becomes a full body builder. A new vehicle type has been added almost every year since.

2025

A second plant

An assembly facility opens in Aiud, 70 km from Gilău. The national ambulance programme running at the same time requires more output than a single plant can deliver on schedule.

2026

The programme delivered

All 1,200 vehicles handed over and accepted, on schedule. A further production hall in Gilău is close to entering service.

Footprint

Two plants, three sales offices, four service points

Manufacturing happens in one region. Support cannot — a vehicle that leaves Gilău has to stay in service wherever it is based, for as long as it is in service.

Gilău, Cluj County — main plant and head office

Engineering, metalwork, sandwich panel production, ABS thermoforming, carpentry, cable harnesses, assembly and testing, on a site next to the A3 motorway and 20 km from Cluj-Napoca International Airport — which is how most of our visiting customers arrive.

Aiud, Alba County — second assembly plant

Opened in 2025, 70 km from Gilău. Added to absorb assembly volume while design and fabrication stay concentrated at the main plant.

Where our vehicles go

Around 85% of the ambulances on Romanian roads were built in Gilău. The largest of those programmes closed this year: 1,200 ambulances for SMURD and the national ambulance services, won in open tender from the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations and funded through Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan. A thousand were type B units on Volkswagen Crafter 4×4 vans; two hundred were type C box bodies on MAN TGE chassis. All of them delivered and accepted within an 18-month schedule.

Standards

Certifications and approvals

Certification covers the part of the work a customer cannot inspect on delivery. Ambulances are certified to EN 1789:2020 + A1 by notified bodies, and Deltamed is a registered vehicle body builder with the Romanian Auto Register.

SUPPLY CHAIN

The standard starts before our gate

A vehicle is only as reliable as the parts inside it, so suppliers are qualified before the first order, not after the first problem.

Qualification before the first order

Every supplier goes through a homologation process: document review, quality assessment and, where relevant, product testing inside Deltamed. How a supplier handles complaints — and how long they take to close them — is part of the assessment, not an afterthought.

Traceable on arrival

Components arrive labelled with their technical data and accompanied by a certificate of conformity, on packaging that carries a packing list. Any part in any vehicle can be traced back to where it came from, years after delivery.

Mandatory for suppliers: ISO 9001 · ISO 14001 · EN 1789 · EN 1865 · applicable national technical regulations · CE marking under the EU Medical Device Regulation 2017/745 · certificate of conformity for every product supplied.

In the service of rescuers. The work behind their work.

Twenty-nine years on, the measure is the same: on the hardest call of the day, the crew should be thinking about the patient, not about the vehicle. That is our work.
